You probably already know that I am a scarf man, and although wearing it bandana like has been somewhat on my mind lately, I have yet to do it, and could not imagine pulling it off as well as he does.

Bohemian Finds : Carved Wood Tableware by The Andes House

Hand carved wooden plates mugs and bowls designed and crafted by Mapuche artisans for The Andes House.Hand carved wooden plates mugs and bowls designed and crafted by Mapuche artisans for The Andes House.Hand carved wooden plates mugs and bowls designed and crafted by Mapuche artisans for The Andes House.

Carved by Mapuche artisans, an indigenous people from south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, the Las Doce tableware collection of wood plates, bowls, and mugs, are crafted using traditional Mapuche technique and designs. Made from a single piece of wood, the artisans hand-carve the outside, and then finish the inside using an industrial lathe.

Made for and available through The Andes House.

Design Thoughts:
Ironically, trees, which are possibly the most universally agreed, to be threatened natural resource, its wood, has also become the favored and expected material of the Eco and environmentally conscientious. To often those designs lack any of the organic personality its once living parent tree may of had. The wood is claimed to be the primary focus of the design, but hardly are its details more interesting then its newly prized, “sustainable” consumer friendly title.

I love this collection because it is uniquely graphic, visually beautiful, and yet so much about homage to a culture, and thus a great respect to its place of origin.

I bet these are especially cool over the summer, when all the ivy is in bloom, adding some complimentary green to the red brick and neutral grey background..

Art Finds : Passover Woodcut by Jacob Steinhardt

A page from the passover book "Haggadah Shel Pesach" with a illustration by jewish Israeli woodcut artist Jacob Steinhardt. From the book “Haggadah Shel Pesach”; a 1923, woodcut illustration, featuring the work of Israeli artist Jacob Steinhardt.

If you really know me, then you already know I absolutely love finding and collecting art from the most unusual places.  One of my favorites, are stylized illustrations I find in old books and manuals. For me; being able to feel the printed paper, and imaging I am actually holding the original artwork, is a magical and intimate experience that I often do not feel while looking at art in galleries and museums.

I love paper! I love wood. I love art; and so naturally I really love woodblock prints, especially when finding them so humbly tucked away in the pages of old books.

Happy Passover everyone!

Luckily I completed my work by late afternoon and then really enjoyed the beautiful spring weather, by walking around my Brooklyn neighborhood, and investigating some more of the Williamsburg goodness I have been working to discover.

Style Notes:
Mixing Plaids and stripes in one outfit can often result in it looking busy and thus unflatteringly clashy. I used a neutral colored, solid scarf, to act as a border, and divide the two patterns, thus making them work together.

Gap denims, Tommy Bahama braided belt, and Joseph Abboud pinstripe shirt.

Back in school, I remember her work always being as chic and interesting as it was very much about interior spaces defined by good and innovative art. It was thus no surprise to me that when I found her personal design blog, that it was cleverly titled “Artworks That Look Like Interiors That Look Like Artworks”.

Based in New York, Lauren offers interior design services through her firm Lauren Stern Design. Since we both share the same last name, I hope you will read her blog as you are already reading mine.

The first collaboration between Korean born, American sculptor Soo Sunny Park, and American sound artist and composer Spencer Topel; this multi-sensory environment installation is a must visit experience. I love that the sculpture is made of chain link fencing, and iridescent acrylic Plexiglas squares, which transmits, reflects, and refracts both the natural and artificial light in a most wonderful way.

Blinging Pollack Slinky

A Pollack inspired spring bracelet suitable for men.Growing up I remember running up and down the stairs of my grandparents third floor apartment, and enthusiastically playing with my Hanukkah gifted slinky. When I came across these Carolyn Forsman, Pollack inspired Spring bracelets, it instantly reminded me of my long forgotten slinky collection, and for a few moments I was a kid again, running up and down those brown and pink, damask patterned carpeted floors, which my grandparents still healthfully enjoy.

Pollack / Harlequin Spring pattern bracelet – $5 here.

There seems to be allot of stigma about men wearing jewelry, especially colorful, and whimsical type jewelry. I personally think more men should embrace colors and not be afraid to wear slightly more bold accessories, which when worn in moderation, contrasted to their otherwise masculine selves, is rather sophisticated, portrays self confidence, creative sensibilities, and in now way, and I say, is in no way, wrong.

If you agree or disagree, let me know in the comments below.
