Art Finds : China Made America

A gold leaf on streched american flag painting by american artist Andrew Shultz.Made in China, a 2011 Gold leaf and acrylic painting over a stretched American flag, by San Francisco based artist Andrew Schoultz.

As explained to me by the artist: Masking a China made American flag in a layer of imitation gold emphasizes the sad but true fact that the wealth of our American economy, which has falsely been perceived to be backed by gold, is in truth, in debt, a debt now owned by China, who because of no labor laws can now also produce all of our new America, at a fraction of our own cost.

“An American Flag fronted by imitation gold that was made in china seems to perfectly describe the crisis we are in as well as the irony of the whole thing.” – Andrew

While up working in the Hampton’s last week, I was hurriedly leaving a small local art gallery when I briefly noticed this gilded composition of stripes and stars, so elegantly leaning against the galleries minimal-mod white wall. Metallics are in right now, and shimmering gold being one of my all-time color-favs, I of course took a step back only to discover this wonderful moment of instant complexity, full of patriotic metaphors, all so artfully made pretty by its layer of oh so glorious gold. Then it hit me; should I really be loving this?

Why I love it? It has all three of my contemporary-art, art buying rules, plus it’s fop art (folk pop) theme I believe will continue to gain broader interest and its value should easily appreciate.

My contemporary-art buying rules to be posted soon.

Design Library : Empire of Space

A art book celebrating the work of Vanity Fair photographer Todd Eberle.Empire of Space : Photography by NYC based American photographer Todd Eberle, introduction by Graydon Carter, forward by Glenn O’Brien, and contributor David Hickey. Published by Rizzoli.

___

A personal retrospective featuring over thirty-some years of his photography career, “Empire of Space” celebrates the work of Todd Eberle who has been the photographer at large for Vanity Fair for over a decade and who has photographed some of the worlds most famous buildings, interiors, and celebrities.

In general, his style is minimal, his attention to detail, unworldly, the spaces he photographs, fabulously chic, and his technique, sheer perfection. The book is full of great interiors, celebrity portraits, and amazing architecture, all so perfectly photographed, and all so deliberately arranged. If you find yourself browsing through the pages forgetting that the day has already gone by, well then, you my friend wouldn’t be the only one to have done so.

Bohemian Finds : Vintage Loop Chairs

Vintage Concrete Loop Chairs designed by swiss furniture designer Willy Guhl.Minimal, curvaceous, and a mid-century classic; a pair of nicely weathered concrete Loop Chairs designed by Swiss furniture designer Willy Guhl.

I am a big fan of concrete furniture. Because of its construction, its shape can have great complexity, yet because of its color and subtle texture, its tone remains simple, elegant, and timeless.

Often when I use concrete pieces, I like to pair them with something warm and or soft, to help soften its coldness, and to help the piece to be more comfortably perceived. To be fair; sometimes you just have to fluff the honey to help it from being called funny!

Although I have never heard of Nick, nor have I ever come across any of his work before, I really am glad that a misspelled Google search led me to discovering this amazing artist and some of his wonderfully designed costumes. Personally, and I’m sure you’ve already noticed, I am a big fan of unique textures, contrast layering, and an even bigger fan of it all being combined with sporadic color. His work, which includes all that intriguing goodness, is so inspiring that I must apologize in advance because surely I will be posting several more posts that will include some of his creations.

Outspoken : An Artists Wish

An artists wishes to be known for his work not his personal life.-All my life I have worked to be able to earn my living, but I thought that one could do good painting without attracting attention to one’s private life. Certainly, an artist wishes to raise himself intellectually as much as possible, but the man must remain obscure. The pleasure must be found in the work. – Paul Cezanne

Often when we talk about struggling stars we may criticize their behaviors and assume their overall success to be less deserving. Music in particular, its vibrations and those who channel its energy, are a reflection of the culture and people, and just as we glorify those artists who highlight our deepest fantasies and desires, remember too that they also bring to life our deepest fears and struggles. It is their own path to overcome those struggles, and since they have sacrificed their own privacy, often they must struggle harder to achieve those same goals.

Remember: criticizing anyone is the unnecessary response of feeling insecure.

Amy, I will miss you, your music, and your love!

Thoughts : Peace in America

Peace + Flag Logo Design Peace + Love = Peace in America

One of the most liberating things about the creation of our constitution is that it was the idea of many rather then the dream of one.  Pity,  preaching, and politics aside, the best way for any country to regain its true power is to be in peace, in love, and most importantly, for everyone to work together as one. In such; power is the ability to be in peace without having the need to be in control.

Happy “July Fourth” to everyone!
Love

Rare & Beautiful : Royere Dressing Table

A modern 50's carved oak dressing table and stool, designed by Jean Royere.“Quilles” dressing table and stool, ca. 1956. Made of oak, brass, and fabric, this sensually carved wood set was designed by the popular 50’s french furniture designer Jean Royere.

To give you a sense of its significance, this set recently sold at auction for $40,000.

___

Royere was born in Paris in 1902 and started out his career as an influential, 50’s and 60’s jet setting interior designer. Most of his furniture is a play on shape and form, and his work is very much a staple of the currently, much sought after, mid century pieces.
